Ladbrokes has halted wagering on BBC show the Great British Bake Off after a flurry of wagers triggered fears the winner's name may have been dripped.

"A run of bets" was placed for one entrant, numerous at shops in the Ipswich location, the bookie said.

It is not understood which baker triggered the flurry or whether any entrants have connections with the Suffolk town.

The first episode of the popular amateur baking contest aired on BBC One Wednesday evening.

It is the sixth series of the program, which challenges 12 hopefuls to impress judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.

Every week the amateur bakers are expected to tackle a baking challenge, with minimal directions, and provide a "signature meal".

'Soggy bottom'

The bookmaker said a flurry of bets came in for one of the 12 whose odds began at 12/1 and were minimized to 6/1, 3/1 and after that evens.

"We provided prices on Monday and, nearly before the yohaig code ink was dry, an unusual number of punters remained in a rush to back only one candidate," David Williams of Ladbrokes stated.

"On Tuesday and Wednesday it was more of the same one-way traffic. That was enough to set our alarm bells ringing and, as a safety measure, we suspended our betting.

"Hopefully, we'll go back up with modified odds quicker instead of later, but we didn't desire to get captured with our pants pulled down and a soggy bottom, so we've chosen to relax up until we are reassured that Bake Off hasn't gone off already.

"When you see a run of bets like this promotion code for one participant at the expense of everyone else that can be an indication to suspend wagering for a bit to evaluate the situation," he included.

Several of the bets put were the maximum the bookmaker would consider wagers made on the show's result, and 90% were placed on one candidate.

The suspension would not affect bets currently placed, the business stated.

The very first contestant to be knocked out of the competitors on Wednesday evening was Stuart Henshall from Surrey.
